Freshly poured and finished concrete patio in a backyard in Tacoma, WA with clean smooth surface

Why Concrete Beats Wood Decks and Pavers for Your Patio

If you're thinking about adding or replacing your patio, you've probably weighed your options. Wood decks look great when new but need staining, sealing, and board replacement every few years. Pavers shift over time, especially in wet climates like Tacoma's, and weeds love growing in the joints. Concrete is a completely different story.

A well-poured concrete patio requires almost no maintenance. You might power-wash it once a year and apply a sealer every few years. That's it. Meanwhile it holds up to rain, frost, furniture, fire pits, foot traffic, and anything else you throw at it. It doesn't rot, warp, or sink.

Concrete also gives you a lot of design flexibility. You're not limited to plain gray. You can choose a broomed finish for texture and grip, an exposed aggregate look for visual depth, or go all-in with a stamped pattern that mimics stone or brick. Your patio can be as simple or as stylish as your budget allows.

We work with homeowners in Tacoma and across Pierce County to design and pour patios that fit their yard, their lifestyle, and their budget. We'll walk you through the options before we start so you're confident in what you're getting.

Patio Finishes and Design Options We Offer

Not all concrete patios look the same. Here's a breakdown of your main finish options and what they each bring to the table:

Broomed Finish

This is the most common patio finish and the most budget-friendly. We drag a broom across the surface while the concrete is still wet to create a subtle texture that improves grip. It's practical, clean-looking, and holds up extremely well.

Exposed Aggregate

After the surface sets slightly, we wash away the top layer of cement paste to expose the small stones and pebbles in the mix. The result is a natural, textured look with great slip resistance. This finish is popular for patios because it adds visual interest without extra cost.

Stamped Concrete

For the look of flagstone, brick, or slate at a fraction of the cost, stamped concrete is the way to go. We press rubber stamp molds into the wet concrete to create realistic patterns and can add color to match your home's exterior. See our stamped and decorative concrete page for more detail on this option.

Salt Finish

Rock salt is pressed into the surface before it cures and then washed away, leaving small pits and dimples that give the patio a unique speckled texture. It's subtle, slip-resistant, and very popular in outdoor applications.

How We Install Your Concrete Patio

Every patio we build follows the same process. Here's what to expect when you hire us:

  1. Site review and estimate. We come out to your property, measure the area, check the ground conditions, and talk through your options. You'll get a written estimate with everything clearly spelled out.
  2. Excavation and base prep. We dig down to the right depth, remove any soft or unstable soil, bring in compacted gravel base material, and grade the surface so water drains away from your home.
  3. Forming and reinforcement. We set up the wood forms that define the shape and edges of your patio, then install rebar or wire mesh to reinforce the slab.
  4. Pour and finish. We pour the concrete, strike it level, and apply your chosen finish. This has to be done at the right pace and in the right weather conditions to get a clean, even result.
  5. Joints, curing, and cleanup. We cut control joints to manage any cracking, allow the concrete to cure properly, remove the forms, and clean up the work area completely.
