What Is Concrete Flatwork and What Can It Do for Your Property?
Flatwork is simply any horizontal concrete surface. Sidewalks, front walkways, back patio slabs, pool surrounds, garage floors, parking pads, and utility pads all fall under the flatwork category. It is one of the most common types of concrete work we do at Precision Tacoma Concrete Contractor, and it is the type of work where proper technique makes the biggest visible difference.
A well-finished concrete walkway is smooth, level, and has clean edges. It drains water away from your home rather than pooling near the foundation. It lasts for decades without needing much attention. A poorly done walkway cracks early, holds water in low spots, and becomes a trip hazard within a few years. The difference comes down to what happens before the concrete is ever poured: grading, base compaction, form placement, and reinforcement.
We serve residential and commercial customers throughout Tacoma, WA and the surrounding area. Whether you need a short front path from your driveway to your door or a long network of walkways across a commercial property, we bring the same level of care to each job.

How a New Walkway Improves Curb Appeal and Safety
Your front walkway is one of the first things people notice about your home. A clean, straight concrete path from the street or driveway to your front door makes a strong impression and adds real value to your property. Beyond looks, it matters for safety. Uneven, cracked, or heaved concrete on a walkway or sidewalk is a genuine trip hazard, especially for kids, older adults, and anyone carrying something.
Choosing the Right Finish
Most residential walkways get a standard broomed finish, which gives the surface a light texture that improves traction in wet conditions. You can also go with an exposed aggregate finish, which adds visual interest by revealing the stone aggregate in the mix. Proper Drainage Matters
Any concrete flatwork near your home needs to be sloped so water drains away from the structure. We grade every flatwork project with this in mind. Getting drainage right at installation prevents water from pooling against your foundation or sitting in puddles that freeze in winter. It is one of those things that most people never think about but that makes a big difference over the life of the concrete.
Replacing City Sidewalk Panels
If you have a public sidewalk in front of your home that has been flagged by the city for repair, we handle those replacements as well. We remove the damaged panels, re-prep the base, and pour new concrete to match the grade and width of the existing sidewalk. We are familiar with Tacoma's sidewalk replacement requirements and can help you get the work done and documented correctly.
How We Install Your New Sidewalk or Walkway
Here is what the process looks like from start to finish so you know exactly what to expect:
- Site prep and demo. We remove any existing concrete or paving material, clear vegetation or debris, and establish the correct grade for proper drainage.
- Base installation. We add compacted gravel base material to the appropriate depth. This step is critical for long-term performance and is often skipped by less experienced contractors.
- Form setting. We set forms to the correct width, thickness, and elevation. For most residential walkways this is a standard 4 inches thick with a light slope for drainage.
- Reinforcement. We place wire mesh or rebar depending on the load requirements and your soil conditions.
- Pour, finish, and cure. We pour the concrete, strike it off flush with the forms, apply the chosen surface finish, and begin the curing process.
- Joint cutting and cleanup. We cut control joints at the right intervals once the concrete has set, remove the forms, and clean up the work area completely.
