Why Your Foundation Determines Everything Above It
A concrete slab or foundation is the part of your project that nobody sees after it's done, but it's the most critical part of the entire build. Every wall, floor, and roof is only as solid as what sits underneath it. If the foundation moves, cracks, or settles unevenly, the whole structure pays for it.
This is especially true in the Pacific Northwest, where we deal with heavy rain, saturated soils, and frost cycles that put constant pressure on anything sitting in or on the ground. A foundation that wasn't built with those conditions in mind won't hold up. We've seen it firsthand, and it's an expensive problem to fix after the fact.
When you hire us for slab or foundation work, you're getting a crew that takes every prep step seriously. The ground gets properly excavated and graded. The base material gets compacted to spec. The formwork is set square and level. The rebar cage is tied correctly with the right spacing and cover. The concrete mix is appropriate for the load requirements. None of that is rushed, because rushing a foundation is how expensive structural problems start.
We do slab and foundation work for residential garages, shops, sheds, accessory dwelling units (ADUs), new home additions, and small commercial structures throughout Tacoma and the surrounding area.

What Goes Into a Properly Built Concrete Slab
Here's what we do on every slab project. This isn't a list of extras. It's the standard process that separates a slab that lasts from one that doesn't.
Excavation and Grading
We dig down to the required depth, remove any organic material or unstable soil, and grade the area so the base is level and drains properly. This step has a bigger impact on long-term performance than almost anything else.
Compacted Gravel Base
We bring in crushed gravel and compact it in layers to create a stable, load-distributing base under the slab. This reduces the risk of settlement and cracking after the pour.
Vapor Barrier
For interior slabs or any floor where moisture migration is a concern, we install a polyethylene vapor barrier under the slab to reduce moisture transfer from the ground into the concrete.
Rebar and Reinforcement
Rebar is tied in a grid pattern with the right bar size, spacing, and concrete cover based on the load requirements. For lighter applications, welded wire mesh may be appropriate. We'll specify the right reinforcement for your project.
Pour, Finish, and Cure
We pour the correct mix design for the application, strike it level, and finish it to the required surface spec. Curing begins immediately and is managed carefully because concrete that dries too fast loses strength. We cut control joints where needed to manage cracking.
What You Can Build on a Properly Poured Slab
A well-built slab opens the door to a lot of different projects. Here are some of the most common things our customers pour slabs for in the Tacoma area:
- Detached garages and carports
- Home workshops and hobby spaces
- Backyard sheds and storage buildings
- Accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and guest houses
- Home additions and sunroom foundations
- Hot tub pads and equipment pads
- Small commercial and light industrial floors
